Introduction Services
International Healthcare
Generally health care in Shanghai is good and facilities continue to improve. Most expats use one of the Western-oriented facilities. Consult with your doctor at home and your insurance company.
Emergencies
If you suffer from a common illness or have a minor emergency and have sufficient time to go to either a foreign clinic or a hospital, rest assured that you will be in capable hands. It is emergency and trauma care that pose the greatest problems. Ambulances may be ill-equipped and response times are variable. Getting to a hospital from most areas of Shanghai can be quicker by taxi than by ambulance. To call an ambulance, dial 120. Don’t count on the operator speaking English. It’s advisable to learn a few key phrases, particularly your own address and the name of your hospital. Another option is to call United Family Hospital, which has 24-hour ER and acute inpatient care, at 2216 3999. If you go to a local hospital, you will need to bring cash or a UnionPay card,
Pharmacies
Most kinds of medicine can be purchased over the counter in Shanghai, including many that would require a prescription in the West. There are pharmacies throughout the city, and many are open 24 hours. Don’t count on English being spoken and prepare a Chinese translation of the name of the medicine if using a local pharmacy. Western hospitals have their own pharmacies where it may be easier to communicate.
Babies Born in Shanghai
You will need to obtain a Birth Certificate and register births with your embassy or consulate. Foreigners born in China do not receive Chinese citizenship or the citizenship of your home country, but you still need to register the birth. Please note that Chinese citizens can not hold dual citizenship so if your partner is a Chinese national you will have to choose only one. The hospital where the baby is born will deliver the local birth certificate to you in Chinese, unless you deliver at an international hospital that provides it in both Chinese and English. You will also have to apply for a passport for your baby. Please check with your nearest embassy for more details. In some cities, if the birth certificate is only in Chinese, you will then have to have it officially translated into English. (Please check with your nearest embassy to see whether this is necessary.)The Chinese Notary Public Bureau issues this and it will display the official stamps of the hospital and the Ministry of Health.
